Starting his career in the service of others came early on in life for Matt. Working in the hospitality industry for over 10 years helped him develop key interpersonal skills, and the now-a-day ever elusive, however invaluable customer service skill set. In the early days, Matt worked as a cook at a quick service restaurant, but found himself moving into a management position very quickly. This is believed to have been when he found his true career path. After a decade of putting his nose to the grindstone, managing various multi-million dollar quick service and casual dining restaurants, he needed a change, and that change would come after horrifying experience with a management team who truly put profit before people. This was when he realized that if he truly wanted to make a difference on a larger scale, and prevent people from experiencing the same thing, he would need to get into a profession that addresses conflict in the workplace and is dedicated implementing proactive programs that enhance the employee experience; this profession is human resources.
After acquiring his education in human resource management, Matt went on the becoming a local and very successful hospitality companies first ever Human Resources Manager. Having to start the department from the ground up, Matt learned very quickly that executive management plays a very different role than most may think. However, with the help of the company veterans, the HR department became part of everyday life and eventually had influence over the organizations 1000 employees between Manitoba and Alberta.
With a few couple years of experience in HR, and an eclectic ensemble of skills and expertise Matt found himself transitioning into a very different environment and in 2009 was hired by an up and coming non-profit, disability support agency. With only a couple dozen employees and a relatively small budget, he had his work cut out for him. But again, with the help of a unique community of people dedicated to helping vulnerable and marginalized adolescence and adults live inclusive lives, Matt built his second HR department, and contributed to the companies exponential growth. In 5 short years, the once up and coming company became a 8 million dollar, multi-provincial organization that supported over 200 vulnerable adults in 3 unique divisions of service and employed more than 200 employees. Prior to Matt’s transition out of the organization, his position as the Director of Human Resources and Administration was at the helm of the organizations administrative division which consisted of human resources, finance, marketing, facility maintenance and administrative support.
Where does HRMATTERS! fit into all of this? I’m glad you asked.
HRMATTERS! was established in 2010 after Matt transitioned out of his role as Human Resources Manager and before transitioning into the non-profit, human services field. HRMATTERS! was a means to help more organizations that needed part time HR support without the financial commitment of having to hire one full time, and to this very day it continues to do just that. Now 16 years later, HRMATTERS! has helped develop several HR departments, saved businesses thousands in fees, fines and lawsuits as HR advisors and as the organizations official HR representative.
Away from work, Matt is an ambitious golfer, an avid reader regarding anything related to leading people, an admirer of ancient world antiques, and a passionate cook.
A few words:
“I am truly humbled by my experiences and thankful to have had such amazing mentors/resources at my disposal. Without the support of my family, friends and team, success would have been impossible. The social services field has undoubtedly given me a new perspective on the fair treatment and support of others and most importantly, the connection that we all share as human beings. Stay true to your values and always remember, success is simply a byproduct of the time and effort you dedicate to doing what you love to do”
